the rain box

The Rain Box is a place of artistic creation and visual experimentation by means of drawing, painting and ceramics. Run by the artist Paula Melero and based in the heart of Heidelberg, The Rain Box is a workshop of ideas where production and exhibition share space. This initiative follows an environmentally friendly ethic through the use of green energy and plastic free packaging.

Why rain in a box? This term has its origin in the story The Words Under Our Feet, where this element plays a key role. This idea of capturing a piece of the nature, retaining the ephemeral, is in line with the pursuit of sense in her work, and the balance between simplicity and beauty.

No distinction is made between a canvas, a piece of paper or a daily object like a spoon or a mug. They are all an opportunity to share a message.

Paula mELERO

Paula Melero, 1992, is a Spanish artist, illustrator and ceramist from Spain, currently based in Heidelberg. She has completed her Sequential Design/ Illustration MA in 2017 with distinction at the University of Brighton. Her background is in Fine Arts and Music.

Her work has been exhibited in the UK and Spain and she has also published some illustrated books. Passionate about stories, she has recently finished her first illustrated book entitled ‘The words under our feet’ written and illustrated by herself.

The dreamlike quality of her work and her ability to combine different techniques and mediums turn her work into a mix of unusual scenes, raising questions and contradictions. Inspired by words, expressions and other language constructions, her work questions to what extent, as speakers and listeners, we are nothing but human beings in continuous need of communication.

Human representation is fundamental to her work. The lack of facial features in the figures plays with the ambiguity of the characters. Avoiding gender patterns and other social stereotypes, this sense of anonymity makes us focus on what is happening instead of who is speaking. ‘I like to think their heads are so small because everything inside their brains is now happening outside, surrounding them’.

ECOLOGICAL ENGAGEMENT

In The Rain Box we are aware of the dangerous environmental situation of our planet. From the beginning we made the decision to guide our project by the values of sustainability and respect for the environment.

This is the reason for only using green carbon free energy in our atelier. We use plastic free packaging and only 100% recycled materials. The only plastic used is from our suppliers which will be used in our shipments for that it can at least be used more than once. A system of water buckets allows us to reuse and save water in our ceramics production. Any rests of clay, glazing and other substances used during our production are recycled as well as any other materials whenever possible.

This project has just started and we have still a lot to learn. We are open to improve and try to make things better. Feel free to share your suggestions!
